ABOUT GSUThe Government Services Union (GSU) was created at a merger convention in August 1999. We were previously known as Union of Public Works Employees and Supply and Services Union. Our 6,000 members are organized into 32 Locals across the country, representing most of the workers at Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) and Metcalfe Realty. Within PWGSC, our members provide compensation, audit, procurement, disposal, telecommunications and informatics, translation, real property and receiver general services to some 100 federal government departments and agencies. They also provide information about government programmes and research the opinions of Canadians. Our members at the Royal Canadian Mint manufacture and distribute all of Canada's circulation and collector coins and well as coins for up to 14 other countries. We represent members in a broad range of job classifications, from trades, industrial and administrative employees at the RCM, to operational, technical and programme and administrative employees within the Federal Public Service. GSU's national office is located in Ottawa and provides members, Locals and elected officers with assistance and representation on grievances, staffing issues, disability and workers' compensation claims and union / management consultation. We also provide financial and membership services to our Locals. GSU's National Council, elected by and from Local delegates at our triennial convention, is composed of 15 Regional Vice-presidents, three National Vice-presidents, an Equity Officer, and the National President. The National Council meets annually. The aims and objectives of the Government Services Union, as determined by our By-laws are; - To unite all members for which this Union has jurisdiction, as determined by the Constitution of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, into a single organisation capable of acting on their behalf.
- To fully support the Public Service Alliance of Canada in the furtherance of its constitutional responsibility for the improvement and protection of the jobs, wages, salaries, health and safety, equality, and other terms of employment of all members.
- To obtain, through democratic means for all members, the best possible standards of wages, salaries and other conditions of employment and to protect their interests, rights and privileges.
- To subscribe unconditionally to the objects outlined in the Constitution of the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
